Architectual Design

Light is the first of painters. There is no object so foul that intense light will not make it beautiful.

~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Emerson’s observation that light is the first of painters beautifully describes the effects of light on design. Whether it an architectural element, a textured surface or a piece of art, light is a powerful medium and in my opinion, most overlooked.

Architectural lighting design, much like architecture itself, qualifies as being neither an art nor a science, rather a mixture of both.

Type of lighting:

  • Incandescent
  • Halogen
  • Fluorescent
  • Compact Florescent Lamps (CFL)
  • Light Emitting Diodes (LED)
  • Fiber Optic Sources

For each type of lighting listed above, there are many types of bulbs. Each has a distinct characteristic, knowing the needs and the budget of the client coupled with technical insight of the capabilities of different lighting, is only the beginning of good lighting design. The three principles are aesthetic appeal, ergonomic aspect and energy efficiency. In good lighting design, one can not exist without the other two.
